MEET FEATURED ARTIST

TiffymLuv

Meet Tiffany Guevara (Tiffy)! She is a first-generation Colombian-American who runs a smal woman-owned business named TiffymLuv. She was mostly a traditional painter until about 5 years ago when she slowly transitioned to digital painting; Now she does short little animations, and various different crafts such as laser engraving, natural fabric dyeing, and sewing.

Tiffy has a B.A. in Studio Arts from California State University, Long Beach. She speaks English and Spanish, and she is learning Japanese and Korean! Since she was little, she has always loved picture books, book illustrations, and comic illustrations. She is planning to illustrate and write children’s books in the future, a few are in the works currently!

She grew up moving a lot since her dad was in the Navy, so during that time they lived off and on in Japan and South Korea. That was where her love of stationery really took off, since she loves how little and cute they make everything! She loved collecting the small figurine erasers, stickers, and picking up a cute new notebook to sketch in and write in.

Tiffy has always loved to draw, and seeing those items in shops overseas really made her want to have her own stationery products that people would buy and cherish just as much as she did. She loves it when customers buy postcards, and she asks them who they will send it to or gift it to, and most of them say they will keep it safe as a print instead!

She loves making products that not only make her feel happy, but also help others feel happy and uplift their own spirits with her artwork. Because she has lived overseas and met so many wonderful people and experienced such different cultures, she tries to incorporate that in her practice.

Her work is inspired by looking at the outside world, specifically the beach, and people-watching. In her free time, she likes to volunteer at the local pet shelter, pick up trash at her local beaches, read comics, go to the beach, library, and parks!

Outside of digital art, her work focuses on sculptural and abstract-based pieces. Overall, she is passionate about illustrating and creating colorful and imaginative stories.

Heart Art Interview with TiffymLuv

Get to know the artist behind the artwork! We asked Tiffy a few questions about their creative journey, inspirations, and the story behind the pieces featured in this volume.

Question 1

Q: Where do you usually find inspiration?

Artist profile

A: I usually find inspiration in looking outside at the natural world. Lately, I have been going to the library more often to pick up books on different topics such as animals and plants that I am interested in learning more about, which also informs and inspires my work.

Question 2

Q: If you could enchant one artist tool/medium/program, what would it be and what would it do?

Artist profile

A: I think I would enchant my paintbrush to turn it into the ultimate paintbrush! I would no longer have to change my brush to get a different size/thickness/or texture! The brush would also be self-cleaning, and I wouldn’t have to worry about getting any paint in the sink, or having paint dry on the brush and ruining the bristles and wooden handles. This would be for acrylic/traditional painting.

Question 3

Q: What comes to mind when you think of magic?

Artist profile

A: When I think of magic I think of witches, familiar animals, and bright mystical objects. I also think of bogs and mystical/misty places that are obscured by the darkness yet illuminated by the moon and bioluminescent creatures such as fireflies.

Question 4

Q: Is there a story or anything you want the subscribers to know about your art pieces featured in this volume?

Artist profile

A: The story behind the art pieces I made for this volume is that there is a black little kitty named Akiko who wants to become a great mage like his master/owner.

Akiko is named this by his owner because she found him during fall season, fall is 秋 (Aki) in Japanese, and attached (子) ko to the end of his name because in Japanese this means child, so his name is “Autumn/fall child.”

He tries enchanting different objects to make them come alive, using obscure objects such as star dust, flower petals, clovers, tea leaves to make them come alive. So far he has managed to enchant a little cat doll.

In the card the little cat familiar has borrowed his owner’s witch hat in order to make his next magical concoction. His first creation sits in the right corner (Bibi) who is a little doll that was gifted to him by his owner, in which he has enchanted to come alive, though it is still a work in progress since the little cat is not as powerful and skillful of a mage as his owner.

In the sticky notes Akiko and his owner stumble upon an enchanted pond, in which Akiko is trying to touch with his paws while his owner examines the water as they sit in an enchanting space together.

Question 5

Q: What is the inspiration or story behind your heart drawing?

Artist profile

A: The story behind the heart drawing is that I wanted to highlight the feature the anatomic parts of a heart on the left side and then pair it with a glass filled with magical liquid on the right, the heart slowly turned into a forest landscape flowing into the ocean encapsulating my favorite things, such as flowers/roses, sunlight, and the sea. Turning it into an encapsulation of the things I love.

Question 6

Q: What is your favorite magical place?

Artist profile

A: I think it would be like an old witch’s workshop or a potion shop! That would be such a cool place to go and learn how to make different spells and potions.

Question 7

Q: What is your favorite tidbit of advice for creatives & artists?

Artist profile

A: My favorite advice I got that really helped me especially during the times I couldn’t draw due to a previous injury and times I felt stuck with art block was: to look at the world around you and actually look at it. Look at how things are created and examine their inner workings (if possible). I took a workshop with the late and wonderful Korean Artist Kim Jung Gi, and he told me that how he draws so vividly from imagination, without needing an immediate reference every time, is by looking at the world around him and actually looking at it. Not drawing from what he thinks a car looks like but what he knows it looks like since he has seen them a hundred times. He draws things he is highly interested in versus drawing things that he is not as passionate about. I think if you draw something you are passionate about others will also feel that way too!

Question 8

Q: Is there anything we didn’t ask that you’d like to share?

Artist profile

A: Hmmm maybe what's your favorite meal? I’d say anything with pasta hehe:)!
